National Nature Reserve – Nanyang Dinosaur Egg Fossils

Nanyang Dinosaur Egg Fossil Group is a national nature reserve located in Xixia, Neixiang, Xichuan, and Zhenping counties at the southern foot of Funiu Mountain, Nanyang City, Henan Province. The nature reserve covers an area of 78,015 hectares. The main object of protection is dinosaur egg fossils. There are 8 families, 12 genera, and 25 species of dinosaur egg fossils in the reserve. The reserve has high biodiversity and the rarity, typically, and representativeness of species and habitats. It has important protection value in maintaining water and soil, regulating climate, and maintaining a virtuous cycle of ecosystems, especially the dinosaur egg fossil group. Protective development is extremely important for studying the ancient ecological structure, paleontological evolution, and exploring the sustainable use of natural resources.

Nanyang Dinosaur Egg Fossil Group Nature Reserve was listed as a national nature reserve in 2003, with a total area of 800 square kilometers, distributed in the three counties of Xixia, Neixiang, and Xichuan. Among them, Xixia County has the largest area of 550 square kilometers. In 1993, a rare dinosaur egg fossil group in the world was discovered in Xixia County. It is the oldest dinosaur egg fossil group discovered in China. It is about 1.3 billion years ago in the early Mesozoic Cretaceous.

From 200 million to 70 million years ago, the ancient Nanyang Basin was a place with a superior natural ecological environment. The basin is full of dense forests, where various animals live, it is a veritable dinosaur paradise and kingdom of dinosaurs. A large number of dinosaur egg fossils, dinosaur bones, and footprint fossils have been discovered within a range of nearly 1,000 square kilometers in Xixia, Neixiang, Xichuan, and Zhenping counties in Nanyang.
