Asian Dinosaurs: All You Need to Know About Them

Over the past few decades, more dinosaurs have been discovered in central and eastern Asia than on any other continent on earth, and have helped fill important gaps in our understanding of dinosaur evolution.  Asia has emerged as a significant region for dinosaur discoveries, contributing greatly to our understanding of dinosaur evolution. Numerous species have been identified across various countries, with notable finds in China, Mongolia, and Japan.

Following you’ll discover the diversity and notable species of Asian dinosaurs, ranging from the tyrannosauroid-related dinosaur Dilong to the feathered and famous Velociraptor.

1. Early Armoured Dinosaurs

A recent discovery in Yunnan, China, has unveiled the earliest known armoured dinosaur (featured Medium-sized, four-legged herbivores with body armour, sometimes including tail spikes)from Asia, named Yuxisaurus kopchicki. This species lived during the Early Jurassic period (192-174 million years ago) and provides insights into the evolutionary history of thyreophorans (armoured dinosaurs) like stegosaurs and ankylosaurs. The fossil includes a fairly complete skeleton, including fragments of the skull, vertebrae, parts of limbs and a large amount of armor. It is the best-preserved and earliest example of an armored dinosaur from all of Asia., which is pivotal for understanding the early diversification of these dinosaurs in Asia.

2. Diversity of Species

Asia is home to a wide range of dinosaur species, with many fossils discovered over the past few decades. Notable species include:

Dilong

Dilong is a small carnivorous dinosaur found in China. It is about 2 meters long and lived in the Early Cretaceous. Its phylogenetic position is between the protoceratops and the more advanced tyrannosaurus. There is only one species in the genus Dilong, which is Dilong strange. Although Dilong is small in size, it has some characteristics that only advanced tyrannosaurus have, such as relatively short forelimbs. In addition, Dilong also has fibrous feathers around its body.

Oviraptor

Oviraptor (egg snatcher) is a dinosaur of the genus Oviraptorosaur of the family Oviraptoridae in the order Saurischia. Oviraptor was small in stature, about the size of an ostrich. Its most obvious feature was its short head and a tall bony crest. It had no teeth in its mouth, but it had two protruding, sharp bony horns at the upper and lower front ends of its mouth. These horns replaced the function of teeth like a pair of forks, and their function was similar to that of the beak of a living parrot.
The forelimbs of Oviraptor were very strong, and each palm had three fingers with sharp, curved claws, with the first finger shorter than the other two. The first remains were collected from the Djadokhta Formation of Mongolia in 1923. The following year, the first scientist who discovered the fossil of Oviraptor believed that the dinosaur was stealing eggs from Protoceratops when it was dying, so it was named Oviraptor.

Psittacosaurus

Psittacosaurus is a genus of extinct ceratopsian dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 125 to 105 million years ago. Known for its remarkable abundance in the fossil record, Psittacosaurus is notable for being one of the most species-rich non-avian dinosaur genera, with up to 12 recognized species found across regions in Asia, including China, Mongolia, Russia, and Thailand.

Therizinosaurus

Therizinosaurus is a fascinating genus of theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70 million years ago, primarily in what is now Mongolia. It belongs to the family Therizinosauridae and is notable for its unique adaptations and characteristics. Unlike most theropods, Therizinosaurus was herbivorous. It is believed that its ancestors transitioned from carnivory to herbivory early in their evolution, leading to significant adaptations in dentition and limb structure to accommodate a plant-based diet.

The genus name of Therizinosaurus is intended to emphasize its huge claws, while the species name is the result of an early researcher’s misclassification of it. Early researchers believed that Therizinosaurus might be a large turtle-like animal.

Mamenchisaurus

Mamenchisaurus is a genus of sauropod dinosaur known for its very long neck, which is almost half of the total length of the body. Its fossils have been found in many provinces in western China. It is closely related to Emeisaurus, and both belong to the Mamenchisauridae family. Most Mamenchisaurus can be over 20 meters long, and sone  can be over 30 meters long. The estimates of the weight of Mamenchisaurus vary greatly from species to species. The smaller species are thought to weigh less than 10 tons, while the largest species are thought to weigh more than 60 tons.

Velociraptor

Velociraptor gained immense popularity through its portrayal in the Jurassic Park franchise. However, the depiction in these films is largely inaccurate; real Velociraptors were about the size of a turkey, not the larger versions shown in the movies. This discrepancy arose partly because filmmakers based their designs on related species like Deinonychus and later discoveries such as Utahraptor, which were indeed larger 15.
In summary, Velociraptor is a compelling example of how scientific understanding evolves and how cultural representations can diverge significantly from reality. Its unique adaptations and behaviors continue to intrigue paleontologists and the public alike.

Importance of Asian Fossils

The fossil record from Asia has filled significant gaps in our knowledge of dinosaur evolution. Many fossils found in central and eastern Asia are from the Cretaceous period and are closely related to birds. This region has yielded a greater number of dinosaur fossils than any other continent, enhancing our understanding of how dinosaurs evolved and spread globally。

Recent discoveries indicate that armoured dinosaurs were present in Asia much earlier than previously thought, challenging assumptions that their evolution was primarily northern. The findings suggest a complex picture of migration and diversification across continents during the Jurassic period.
